Krita blows the pants off Photoshop in terms of digital painting.Īnd Photoline's external app link allows for an efficient round-tripping workflow - making it easy to integrate other applications into the mix.įor RAW processing many alternatives exist. If you enjoy making digital art in your free time, no-one is telling you that Photoshop is the only, or even best option: Photoline is extremely powerful for image compositing (arguable offers a more powerful layer stack compared to Photoshop), and Krita is a splendid digital painting app with many image compositing features as well (and open source and free!). And I am entirely happy with my decision.

So, after having been a loyal user of Adobe software since Photoshop v3.5, I decided to switch to alternatives.

I have nothing against a rental option, as long as there is also an option to purchase a full license. I used to work with Adobe's applications up until ~3 years ago, when I foresaw the shadow of Adobe's Digital Serfdom. I teach at various colleges, and I have a license for CS6 and a free educational subscription to CC.

Would you know if the full version recognizes the previous version and will upgrade versus doing a clean install? although that would certainly be annoying. I don't mind paying the extra for a full version. I've had V5 for a year so perhaps my eligibility to upgrade has expired? Seems to me LR6 came out around April, 2015. Seems to me there have been time limits to upgrade in the past. Looking around on various sites I was afraid that was the case.Īdobe talks about an upgrade version 6 for $80 but I'm unable to find it. Student pricing is only available for the subscription version of PS and LR. You can still buy the stand-alone version of LR6 but the student license is gone. I have LR 5 so either an upgrade version or a (student) full version that will upgrade (and not remove my LR5 catalogs, presets and so on) would be fine. Is this true of Adobe Lightroom 6 student version as well? I'm finding several sites that sell the full version for $150 but no one is selling the student version which typically goes for around $90.

Typical semester is 3 months, so second month install the 30 day trial on a desktop computer at home, and then third month install the 30 day trial on a laptop making sure that last trial gets you through exams.

I've had an occasional student manage to avoid paying the subscription by first month working in the school labs without access to the software at home. If your school is anything like the ones where I work Adobe products are exclusively provided and classes are typically taught as Adobe software training courses - feeds a cycle unfortunately. If your career goals will require you to use Adobe products in the workforce then you have no choice but to train with those products and pay Adobe. The cost compared with the old student discount price is actually a little less for a year's subscription but when that year is over you either keep paying or lose access. Adobe does still off faculty and student discounts but only for the subscription products. I'm a college professor and teach Art/graphics/photo. I guess now-a-days you have to be a millionaire in order to get an education.

Thanks for clearing that up, at least I don't have to waste any more time searching. There's Adobe InDesign for outstanding page layouts, Adobe XD for prototyping, Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe Rush for video editing (here are some other video editing software options), the new Adobe Substance suite of 3D tools and still more besides. You can't. But Creative Cloud includes a whole lot more, with a broad range of desktop tools that are essential for many creatives.

Some of the most popular Adobe apps, such as Photoshop and Illustrator (see our guide to how to download Photoshop), are now available for the iPad as well as for Mac and Windows. The Creative Cloud suite includes more than 20 apps for creatives, whether you're an illustrator, a digital artist, video editor or hobbyist, and they're always being updated and improved. Why subscribe to Adobe? Well, Adobe's apps have been the go-to creative software for artists and designers from all kinds of disciplines for a long time now, and there's good reason for that. You can cancel with no strings attached at any time during the first month.
